Judicature:

The Union Territory comes under the jurisdiction of Calcutta High Court, which has a group of more than 3000 islands out of which 265 are uninhabited. The Andaman Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal 1,255 km from Kolkata and 1,190 km from Chennai. The islands are 193 km from Cape Negrais in Burma. Five large islands grouped together are called the Great Andaman's and to the south is the Island of Little Andaman. There are some 204 islets, the two principal groups being the Ritchie Archipelago and the Labyrinth Islands. The total area is about 6,408 sq km. The Great Andaman group is about 467 km. long and, at the widest, 51 km broad. The Nicobar Island are situat4d to the south of the Andamans, 121km from Little Andaman. There are 19 islands, 7 uninhabited, with a total area of 1,841 sq km. The island are usually divided into three sub-groups (southern, central and northern), the chief island in each being, respectively, Great Nicobar, Camotra with Nancowrie and Car Nicobar. There is a fine landlocked harbour between the islands of Camotra and Nancowrie, known as Nancowrie Harbour.

History:

The modern history of Andaman And Nicobar Islands commences with the establishment of a settlement by the East India Company in 178 but it was soon abandoned in 1796. After the failure of the First War of Indian. Independence in 1858, the Britishers declared it Kalapani for deportation of political prisoners and dreaded criminals. During the World War II, the Japanese forces occupied the Andaman Islands on March 23, 1942, they when the Allies won the war in 1945, these islands came back to the Britishers. Since freedom of the country in August 1947, the Andaman and Nicobar Island are a union territory administered by the President of India acting through a Lt.-Governor. The seat of administration is at Port Blair, which Chennai (1,190 km) by steamer service. Air service also operates from Kolkata.

Economy:

Rice, coconut and arecanut are the principal crops of the Union Territory. Pulses, fruits and vegetables are the other crops. Cultivation of rubber and palm oil has also begun in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Forests cover 7,171 sq km of the total area of Islands. Water around the Islands is rich in fish. Bamboo flat, Bakultala, Long Island, Haddu and Chattam are the centres of large scale industries. There are also medium and small scale industries in the Union Territory. The large scale industries are engaged in sawn timber, Commercial playwood, match splints and veneers. The small scale and handicrafts units are engaged in shell crafts. Furniture making, wheat grinding, oil seeds crushing, etc. The union Territory is connected by air as well as sea from Port Blair.
